(Westminster, CA) – Today, former Assemblyman Van Tran announced his candidacy for the Orange County Board of Supervisor’s 1st District, a seat incumbent Supervisor Andrew Do will be vacating next year due to term limits.

“I have spent my entire public service career fighting on behalf of Orange County. The 1st District will need a strong voice that speaks for the interest of its residents on a wide range of issues, from maintaining affordable healthcare to dealing with the plight of the homeless,” said Tran. “As a former Garden Grove City Councilman and Assemblyman who had represented a large portion of this supervisorial district, I was proud to serve as an advocate for the taxpayers and their families. And as a county supervisor, I will continue to champion for all county residents, addressing priorities in funding such as public safety, transportation, public health and economic development, while exploring for ways to cut waste, bringing transparency and accountability to county government. I will work collaboratively with other Board members in the common goal of moving Orange County forward.”

Tran was first elected to the State Assembly in 2004, becoming the first Vietnamese-American in the United States to be elected to any state legislature. While in the Assembly, Tran was selected by his legislative colleagues as Assistant Republican Leader as well as on a number of influential committees including, Business & Professions, Banking & Finance, Utilities & Commerce, Government Organization, among others. He also served as Chairman of the Select Committee on International Trade.

Tran is currently serving as director on the Orange County Water District for District 4, which partially overlaps with the 1st Supervisorial District. He is also Supervisor Do’s Chief of Staff, helping to serve the ten major cities and communities within the 1st District.

“Orange County is the sixth largest county in the U.S. and home to 3.2 million residents. Our residents are the epitome of the American Dream, whether they are entrepreneurs and small business owners in Huntington Beach, Little Saigon, or La Palma”, added Tran. “As an immigrant, public servant and small business owner, I want to bring that entrepreneurial, can-do energy to the BOS. Fighting for the residents of the 1st District and being a strong voice for the working family will be my first priority.”

Tran is a California attorney since 1994. He has earned a Bachelor’s degree in political science, a Master’s in Public Administration, with emphasis in state and local government, and a Juris Doctorate in Law. Along with his wife, Cyndi, the Trans have three children — Alex, Sophie and Emma.

The BOS’s 1st District covers the cities of Cypress, Fountain Valley, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Los Alamitos, La Palma, Seal Beach, Westminster, and the unincorporated communities of Midway City and Rossmoor, or approximately 700,000 residents.
